Apple "submits" to the EU - Changes App Store rules to adapt to the bloc's laws
Apple has changed rules and fees on its App Store in the European Union, after the bloc's regulators ordered the company to remove trade barriers.
Apple said developers will pay a 20% processing fee for purchases made through the App Store, although that can be reduced to 13% for the company's small business program. Developers who send customers outside the App Store for payments will pay a 5-15% fee.
The changes are intended to help Apple avoid paying daily fines of 5% of its average daily worldwide revenue, or around 50 million euros a day, after it was given 60 days to show it was compliant with the bloc's Digital Markets Act.
Apple has already paid a €500 million fine imposed by EU regulators in April. “The European Commission is asking Apple to make a number of additional changes to the App Store. We disagree with this outcome and plan to appeal,” Apple sources said.
In a statement, the European Commission said it will now review the company's changes for compliance with the Digital Markets Act.
"As part of this assessment, the Commission considers it particularly important to obtain the views of market operators and interested third parties before deciding on further steps," the EU executive body said.
Critics of the company called Apple's changes "a mockery of fair competition in digital markets." According to them, "apps with competing payments are not only taxed, but also commercially restricted in the App Store."
