Emigrant remittances to Albania have set another record, increasing significantly during the first half of 2026.

According to data from the "Bank of Albania", during the second quarter alone, emigrants sent 347.1 million euros to the country, the highest level recorded for a quarter since 2008, when the available data series began.

Compared to the same period last year, when remittances were around 281.1 million euros, the increase is 23.5%, or around 66 million euros more.

This also represents a strong acceleration in the growth rate. In the second quarter of 2025, remittances had grown by only 4.9% in annual terms, while this year the pace is almost five times higher.

In total, during the period January-June 2026, emigrants brought about 621.4 million euros to Albania, compared to about 531.8 million euros in the same period last year.

This means that in just one year, remittances have increased by nearly 90 million euros, or 16.9%. The six-month figure is also the highest recorded in the data series since 2008.

This year's increase comes after another record set in 2025. Throughout last year, remittances reached around 1.12 billion euros, significantly exceeding the 1 billion euro level for the first time.

However, the strengthening of the lek against the euro continues to dampen some of the effect of these remittances for households that convert their income into the local currency. During the first half of 2026, the euro continued its downward trend against the lek, going from a monthly average of around 96.6 lek in January to around 94.8 lek in June.
