Sejko, meeting with EBRD - Focus on lending, small businesses and EU integration

The Governor of the Bank of Albania, Gent Sejko, held a meeting with Francis Malige, Managing Director for Financial Institutions at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).

At the center of the discussions was the cooperation between the Bank of Albania and the EBRD, developments in the banking sector, the increase in lending to the economy, and the process of approximating the Albanian regulatory framework with European Union standards.

Another important topic was the performance of lending to the economy, especially private sector financing. Sejko assessed that the Albanian banking system continues to be characterized by capitalization, liquidity and stability, creating premises for continued support of the economy through lending.

He underlined that credit expansion should be done in a prudent and healthy manner, while maintaining the quality of the loan portfolio and risk management standards.

The meeting also discussed the Bank of Albania's program for financing micro and small businesses. The program aims to facilitate their access to financing and support investments and the expansion of economic activity.

EBRD representatives positively assessed the initiative and expressed their willingness to support the Bank of Albania, as well as to consider concrete cooperation opportunities for its implementation.

A special part of the discussions was dedicated to the process of equivalence of the Albanian banking regulatory and supervisory framework with that of the European Union. Governor Sejko emphasized the progress made over the years in the approximation of the regulatory framework and supervisory practices with European standards. According to him, this process is important for the strengthening of the banking sector and the financial integration of Albania into the European market.

The parties also discussed support for the Deposit Insurance Agency and strengthening financial security mechanisms, while the EBRD's assistance for increasing institutional capacities and aligning with international best practices was appreciated.
