118 million euros for Durrës - EU and France finance sewer rehabilitation

The Ministry of Finance and the French Development Agency (AFD) have signed an agreement to finance the rehabilitation of the sewage network and improve wastewater treatment in the city of Durrës.

The program has a total value of around 118.2 million euros, of which around 85 million euros are a grant from the European Union, while 33.4 million euros are financed through an AFD loan.

The agreement was signed by the Minister of Finance, Petrit Malaj, the Ambassador of France to Albania, Catherine Suard, and the General Director of AFD Group, Christophe Lecourtier.

The project aims to improve the sewage and wastewater treatment system in Durrës, directly impacting the quality of public services and reducing pollution along the Adriatic coast.

According to the head of AFD Group, the project is expected to improve the living conditions of more than 400 thousand people, including residents and citizens visiting Durrës during the tourist season.

The European Union representative described the project as the EU's largest environmental investment in Albania to date. Through the Western Balkans Investment Framework, the EU will provide around 85 million euros in the form of a grant.

The cooperation will continue with the second phase of the program, where the European Union foresees another funding of 52 million euros, mainly in the form of a grant.

According to the parties, the investments aim to modernize the water supply and sewage infrastructure and bring better public services, while simultaneously contributing to environmental protection and the sustainable development of the city.
