Google, 13 billion euro bet - The American giant expands AI infrastructure in Finland

Google will invest at least 13 billion euros in Finland over the next two years, the company's largest investment in Europe. The project aims to significantly expand the company's digital capabilities and the infrastructure that supports the development of artificial intelligence.
The investment will include new data centers and supporting infrastructure in the municipalities of Hamina, Kajaani, Muhos and Vaala. The new capacities will be used for several of Google's services, including the Gemini artificial intelligence model.
The company has also earmarked funding for clean energy projects, as well as funds for biodiversity and local communities. The investments will support education, scientific research and professional skills development.
Construction of the new infrastructure is expected to take place during 2027 and 2028. According to Google estimates, the project will add about 3.6 billion euros to the Finnish economy annually and support more than 37,000 jobs across the country. About 16,000 of them are expected to be created during the construction phase.
Even after the completion of the works, the data centers are expected to support about 7 thousand jobs per year, including technical positions, facility maintenance, equipment and service suppliers, as well as local businesses that benefit from the activity of the employees.
Google has been present in Finland since 2009, when it bought a former paper mill in the coastal town of Hamina and transformed it into a data center.
Finland has become an important destination for the industry thanks to its cool climate, relatively cheap energy and abundant nuclear, wind and hydropower resources. The Finnish government is aiming to attract more investment in the digital sector at a time when the economy is facing weak growth and record unemployment.
Google's investment is expected to further strengthen Finland's position as one of the European centers for artificial intelligence infrastructure and the digital economy.
