August breaks records - Europe experiences hottest summer on record

August 2026 was the hottest month ever recorded in the world, in another alarming sign of escalating climate change. According to data from the European Copernicus observatory, the global average air temperature reached 16.96°C, equaling the record set in July 2023.

The temperature was 1.65°C above the pre-industrial period 1850–1900. This was also the first month since November 2025 that the global temperature again crossed the 1.5°C threshold, set in the Paris Agreement as a key limit for efforts to curb global warming.

Oceans outside the polar regions also set a new record. Their average temperature reached 21.07°C, the highest level ever recorded for the month of August, surpassing the record set in 2023.

According to Copernicus, the summer of 2026 was also the hottest on record in Western Europe. The heatwaves began in May and were accompanied by severe droughts, extremely low river levels and fires in several places.

In August, the average temperature over European land was 20.26°C, ranking the month as the fourth hottest August on record on the continent.

Experts warn that the consequences of record temperatures are being increasingly felt by economies, communities and ecosystems. The UN Executive Secretary for Climate Change linked the situation directly to the massive use of coal, oil and gas.

According to him, the way to avoid new temperature records is to accelerate the transition to clean energy.
