Who supplies steel to Albania? An analysis of two key metals and their origins

In the analysis of foreign trade regarding the main groups that our country imports, we find products such as means of transport, fuels, machinery and electrical equipment, as well as metals. During 2024, means of transport were the chapter with the highest value, followed by fuels. Among the five main imported chapters, we also find cast iron and steel with a value for 2024 of 48 billion lek.

“Scan Intel” has conducted a detailed analysis of the main trading partners in the import of cast iron, steel and aluminum. The import of steel and aluminum in Albania is an important aspect of the country’s economy. Albania imports these metals mainly for use in construction, manufacturing, infrastructure and the production of vehicles and other industrial equipment. We emphasize that construction is a key sector for the country’s economy and has had a major boost in recent years.

According to data for 2024, Albania was supplied with iron and steel by Turkey, Oman, Greece, China, Egypt, Italy, Libya, Algeria and North Macedonia. So, these are the 10 main partners in terms of iron and steel imports that also have the largest share. Turkey accounts for almost 40% of total iron and steel imports.

Meanwhile, on the other hand, a metal that is among the chapters with the highest import value is aluminum and its articles. During 2024, this chapter recorded an import value of 14.7 billion lek.

As for aluminum, Italy, Turkey, Greece, Bahrain, China, Serbia, Kosovo, North Macedonia and the United Arab Emirates are the main suppliers. The top five countries account for about 70% of aluminum imports.

Although data for 2024 show that imports for the "Construction materials and metals" group fell by 2.3% in value, while they increased in volume. Also, imports for the two chapters analyzed show a decrease, compared to 2023 and 2022.
