Safe Internet, how far has Albania progressed? - Tafa: Our challenge, a protected online environment for businesses and the services we offer
Safer Internet Day brought together leaders of the National Cyber Security Authority and the Albanian Chairmanship of the South East European Cooperation Process.
The main discussion of this meeting was the strengthening of regional cooperation on cybersecurity. The Head of the National Cyber Security Authority, Igli Tafa, stated that thanks to partnerships with strategic allies, such as the US State Department, the European Union, etc., Albania has made significant progress in strengthening its cybersecurity capacities.
“As part of the Western Balkans, Albania has made significant progress in the field of digitalization. We have managed to digitize over 95% of public services, providing convenience and efficiency to our citizens. However, beyond digitalization, the main challenge remains the protection and creation of a safe online environment for businesses and the services we provide to our citizens. We have understood that cybersecurity is not only a technological issue, but also an essential factor for national and regional stability. Today we have the opportunity to further expand this cooperation, by engaging in a joint discussion with representatives from 13 countries, to create a safer environment and strengthen regional cooperation in the field of cybersecurity. Southeastern Europe has a common history.”
But human resources in this sector still remain a problem.
“One of the biggest problems we face is the lack of capacity and human resources in the field of cybersecurity. This is a key issue for our discussion today, as we need to find effective alternatives to build capacity and strengthen our cyber defenses.”
According to the national coordinator of the Southeast European Cooperation Process, Antonela Dhimolea, cooperation in cybersecurity is of particular importance and has yielded promising results.
"We emphasize the growing importance of cooperation with the EU on security issues, including through regular dialogue at all levels, recognizing the importance of harmonizing respective positions and aligning policies on issues falling under the EU's Common Foreign and Security Policy, as well as the Common Security and Defence Policy. We are determined to cooperate closely and take coordinated action to confront and defeat persistent threats, such as hybrid threats (cyberattacks, disinformation, economic pressure, etc.), organized crime, high-level corruption, migrant smuggling, human trafficking, arms and drug smuggling, terrorism and violent extremism."
