Germany ahead of elections - Citizens concerned about rising cost of living and

The majority of German citizens are concerned about high prices as Europe's largest economy is now shrinking, a poll showed ahead of the February 23 election.

The survey conducted by the German company R&V on January 23-25 showed that 70% of Germans are worried about the rising cost of living, up from 57% in the previous survey in the summer. Of those surveyed, 68% fear an economic downturn, up from 48% in the previous survey.

Increased competition from abroad, high energy costs, high interest rates and an uncertain economic outlook have taken their toll on the German economy, which shrank in 2024 for two consecutive years and has become one of the main concerns of voters.

The election was called after Chancellor Olaf Scholz's three-way coalition with the Greens and Free Democrats collapsed in November.

Disagreements over how to save Europe's largest economy contributed to the coalition's collapse, while the dire situation was reflected in the country's auto industry, with Volkswagen and other companies cutting jobs to avoid bankruptcy.

More than 6 out of 10 people in Germany consider politicians, both in government and opposition, unfit to carry out their duties.

Three in four Germans are concerned about the polarization of society, up from 48% in the summer. The sharp increase is attributed to a series of high-profile murders in public spaces by people with an immigrant background and how parties have reacted to them, the head of the study said. Immigration is seen as a central political issue in the country, causing further divisions.
