"No more burning pensions for immigrants" - Agreement with Italy enters into force, working years are combined
Albanian immigrants who have worked in Italy, but also Italians who have contributed to Albania, can now combine their years of social security. The agreement on the mutual recognition of contributions has officially entered into force, bringing great relief to thousands of citizens.
Although this agreement should have been implemented earlier, it comes as a significant step in protecting workers' rights. From now on, no year of work will be lost, as was previously the case when contributions were burned in the absence of a bilateral agreement.
"This is an important moment for both countries, because it guarantees the protection of workers. This is an administrative agreement that creates a security that was previously lacking. The Italian community has always been supportive of the social and economic sector in our country. The agreement is very positive, because it provides for full coverage of contributions. Finally, even those who have worked in Albania and Italy will have the right to benefit from a pension, a fundamental right for each of us."
According to data from the Italian Senate, for 2025 alone, the projected costs for Albanian pensions will be 51.6 million euros. By 2032, this figure is expected to reach around 270 million euros.
“Many Albanians were in difficult situations. They received a partial check or benefited from limited repatriation schemes that forced them to return to their country of origin. This penalized citizens who had been in Italy for years. Now, as of January 1, 1997, Albanians will be treated on the basis of the principle of equality, without any discrimination – the same as any other citizen, both in rights and obligations.”
To receive a pension in Italy, at least 20 years of work are required, while in Albania 15 are sufficient. But thanks to this agreement, those who do not meet the requirement in one country can combine years from both countries and still receive a pension.
