How did the employment trend change at the beginning of the year? Unemployment rate increases for women, decreases for men
The Institute of Statistics has published detailed data regarding the employment situation for men and women during the first quarter of 2025, reflecting recent changes and trends in the labor market in Albania. According to the official report, the overall employment rate for the population aged 15-64 is 69.5%, however, when these figures are broken down by gender, the differences become more visible and important for analysis.
For women, the labor force participation rate is 70.9%, showing an improvement from the previous year, while for men this indicator is higher, reaching 82.8%. This shows that men have a labor market participation rate that is 12 percentage points higher than women, highlighting a gender gap still present in active participation in the economy. Compared to the first quarter of 2024, the participation rate for women has increased by 1.5 percentage points, while for men by 0.9 percentage points.
When it comes to the employment rate, which measures the share of those who have an active job in the total population aged 15-64, for men this rate reaches 75.8%, while for women it is lower, at 63.3%. Here too, compared to the same quarter of the previous year, there is an increase in the employment rate for both genders, with an improvement of 1.4 percentage points for men and 1.0 percentage points for women. This indicates a continuous effort to increase inclusion in the labor market and an increase in opportunities to find work, especially for women, who have traditionally been less represented in this market.
However, despite the increase in participation and employment, the unemployment situation shows some challenges. In the first quarter of 2025, the official unemployment rate is 7.6% for men and 9.8% for women, indicating that unemployment is higher among women. Compared to the same quarter of 2024, the unemployment rate has increased by 0.4 percentage points for women, while for men it has decreased by 0.6 percentage points.
