Elon Musk, 97.4 billion USD for OpenAI - Tesla CEO seeks to prevent startup from becoming a profitable firm
A consortium led by Elon Musk said it has offered $97.4 billion to buy the nonprofit that controls OpenAI, in another attempt by the billionaire to block the artificial intelligence startup's transition into a for-profit firm.
Musk's offer is likely to heighten long-standing tensions with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman over the future of the ChatGPT maker. Altman immediately responded: "No thanks, but we'll buy Platform X for $9.74 billion if you want."
Musk co-founded OpenAI with Altman in 2015 as a non-profit organization, but left before the company got off the ground. He founded competing startup xAI in 2023.
Musk, the CEO of Tesla and owner of the technology and social media company X, is a close ally of President Donald Trump. He spent more than a quarter of a billion dollars helping Trump’s campaign and heads the Department of Government Efficiency, a new White House branch tasked with radically shrinking the federal bureaucracy. Musk recently criticized a $500 billion project led by OpenAI that Trump announced at the White House.
Altman's startup is now trying to become a for-profit organization, which he says is needed to secure the capital needed to develop better artificial intelligence models.
Musk sued Altman and others in August of last year, claiming they violated contract terms and put profit ahead of the public good. In November, he asked a U.S. district judge for a preliminary injunction blocking OpenAI from converting to a for-profit entity.
Musk's lawsuit against OpenAI says the founders originally approached him to fund a nonprofit focused on developing artificial intelligence for the benefit of humanity, but that it was now focused on making money.
