How much does gold weigh in Albania's foreign exchange reserves? - It

As a result of the price increase in international markets, the value of monetary gold in Albania has also increased. The latest data from the Bank of Albania shows that monetary gold reached 316 million euros at the end of May, thus increasing by 1% compared to April and 34.4% compared to the same month last year.

In total, at the end of May, reserve assets, which include monetary gold, SDRs (special drawing rights) and debt securities, reached a figure of 6.78 billion euros. Therefore, the foreign exchange reserve has increased by 23% compared to May of last year.

Gold accounts for 4.66% of total foreign exchange reserves, which is the highest level reached in years. If we compare May 2020, where monetary gold accounted for only 3.9% of total reserves, we note that the weight of monetary gold in foreign exchange reserves has increased significantly year on year, reaching historical records in 2025.

At the end of December 2024, the gross foreign exchange reserve stock of 6.26 billion euros also includes monetary gold of 108.59 thousand ounces or 3.38 tons.

Referring to the official exchange rate, 1 ounce of gold was 289 thousand lek during the month of June.

One of the main roles of gold for central banks is to diversify their reserves. The bank is responsible for the national currency, but the latter can be subject to fluctuations in value depending on the perceived strength or weakness of the economy.

In times of need, banks may be forced to print more money, as interest rates may be at low levels. This increase in the money supply may be necessary to avoid economic turmoil, but at the cost of currency depreciation. Gold, in contrast, is a finite physical commodity whose supply cannot be easily increased. As such, it is a natural hedge against inflation.
