Germany plans to create Cyber Dome - Berlin asks Israel for help to strengthen digital defense
Germany aims to expand its partnership with Israel to strengthen cyber defense. Berlin plans to create a Dome to stop digital attacks from adversaries such as Russia and China.
Germany aims to establish a joint German-Israeli center for cyber research and deepen cooperation between the two countries' intelligence and security agencies, German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt said.
Berlin is among Israel's closest allies in Europe and has increasingly sought to rely on Tel Aviv's defense expertise as the country ramps up its military capabilities and contributions to NATO in the face of growing threats from Russia and China.
"Military defense alone is not enough at this point. A significant improvement in civil defense is also essential to strengthen our overall defense capabilities," Dobrindt said during a visit to Israel.
The minister, who was appointed by new German Chancellor Friedrich Merz last month, outlined a five-point plan aimed at creating a "Cyber Dome" for Germany as part of its defense strategy.
The plan specifies the construction of a joint German-Israeli center for research in this sector; strengthening cooperation in digital defense; expanding German defense against drones; and developing a civilian shelter and emergency warning system like the one used in Israel during the war with Iran.
Earlier, sources from the Bavarian state premier called for the purchase of 2,000 defensive missiles to equip Germany with an "Iron Dome" system similar to the short-range missile technology available to Israel.
