The fires caused 16.75 million euros in damage to the forests - So far, the flames have burned almost 2800 hectares
Temperatures are rising, and along with them, the damage from the fires that are ravaging thousands of hectares of forests in Albania is also increasing.
According to data from the European Forest Fire Information System, which monitors the state of fires in Europe and processes statistics, about 2,800 hectares of forests and pastures have burned so far.
The majority of these fires have occurred near the cities of Vlora and Lezha, according to EFFIS reports. The economic damage, calculated using the standard formula for assessing damage from forest fires, is approximately 16.75 million euros to date.
Compared to last year, even though we are only in the first half of the year, the economic damage from fires is significantly lower. During 2024, fires caused damage worth around 280 million euros in forests and pastures. The year 2024 is considered a record year for Albania, both for the number of fires and the economic damage they caused over the last 15 years, according to EFFIS.
On the other hand, the Ministry of Defense and the National Civil Protection Agency are intensively engaged in monitoring and preventing fires in Albania.
To support the intervention on the ground, the ministry has activated 64 firefighting vehicles. Meanwhile, the situation in the country's skies is being monitored in real time by the Bayraktar TB2 drone, part of the Air Force's modernization, which patrols continuously to ensure observation and rapid response to fires.
