Italy, the "loyal" partner of trade exchanges/ About 27% of Albania's foreign trade is carried out with this country

Italy continues to maintain its position as Albania's most important trading partner, according to data for the period 2005-2025. Bilateral trade has experienced continuous growth over the last two decades, with the exception of several years hit by the global economic crisis, the pandemic or even the effect of the devaluation of the common European currency, which have "distorted" the figures.
In 2005, the value of trade exchanges between the two countries was around 124.4 billion euros, while in 2024 this amount reached 351.4 billion euros, increasing almost threefold. During the period January-September 2025 alone, exchanges reached 246.4 billion euros, which indicates that a level similar to that of last year is expected to be maintained by the end of the year.
In terms of trade structure, imports consistently dominate. In 2024, Italy imported goods worth 162 billion euros from Albania, while exports to our country reached 189 billion euros. This report shows a negative trade balance for Albania, but also reflects the dependence of the Albanian economy on Italian goods, equipment and raw materials.
In the period 2005-2012, bilateral trade increased from 124 billion to 277 billion euros, reflecting the positive effects of the opening of the Albanian market to the European Union and the strengthening of economic relations with Italy. The year 2011 marked an important turning point, with Albanian exports increasing to over 104 billion euros, while imports exceeded 166 billion euros.
After 2020, affected by the pandemic, exchanges fell to 275 billion euros, but recovered strongly in 2021, when they reached 350 billion euros, and peaked in 2022 with over 414 billion euros, which remains the historical record for trade relations between the two countries.
In recent years, although the figures have been slightly decreasing due to the decline of the euro, compared to the record level of 2022, Italy continues to be the first and main destination for Albanian exports and the largest source of imports. Around 27% of Albania's total foreign trade is carried out with Italy, making it the country's most stable economic partner in the last two decades.
