100,000 Greek homes benefit from heating package - The 647 million euro program

The Greek Ministry of Environment and Energy published the first list of households that will benefit from the national program for the modernization of heating systems.

In total, over 100,000 homes have been accepted, of which 5,000 are classified as households in need. The renewable energy heating program had an initial budget of €223 million, with support from the NextGenerationEU fund, but was later expanded to €647 million.

The initiative supports energy efficiency improvements in buildings and the replacement of old heating systems that use fossil fuels with new systems based on renewable energy. In particular, Greece has set a target of providing 52.6% of its heating from renewable sources by 2030, according to the National Energy and Climate Plan. In 2023, the level reached 26.2%, so there is still a lot of work to do to meet the target.

Most buildings in the country currently use oil or natural gas for heating. The aim is to switch to green technologies, such as heat pumps or rooftop solar water heating systems. These solar systems are particularly popular in Greece, as the hot sun provides enough thermal energy for hot water even during the winter months.

Support for the general public is provided according to income criteria, covering 50% to 60% of the cost. Beneficiaries receive up to 1,020 euros for energy improvements to their homes. As for families in need, there are no income criteria and they can benefit from up to 6,000 euros for each installation.

More applications are expected to be approved in the coming months, as Greece aims to complete the program before June 2026, when the EU Recovery and Resilience Fund closes.
