Trump signs bill ending longest government shutdown in US history

US President Donald Trump signed legislation ending the longest government shutdown in US history, just hours after the House of Representatives voted to restart food aid programs and pay hundreds of thousands of federal workers.

The Republican-controlled House passed the package by a vote of 222 to 209, with Trump's support helping to preserve his party's unity in the face of strong opposition from Democrats, who expressed disappointment that a long standoff in the Senate failed to secure a deal to extend health insurance subsidies.

The signing of the law will allow federal employees to return to work after a 43-day shutdown, although it is not yet clear how quickly full government services and operations will be restored.

“We must never let it happen again,” Trump said in the Oval Office during the signing ceremony. He also used the moment to criticize Democrats. “This is not the way to run a country.”

The deal extends government funding until January 30, but will add about $1.8 trillion in debt per year, on top of the $38 trillion the US currently has.

The end of the lockdown brings hope that essential air travel services will have time to recover, especially with Thanksgiving just two weeks away. The restoration of food assistance to millions of families is also expected to ease household budgets and boost spending during the Christmas shopping season.
