TikTok reopens, government lifts access restrictions

The government has decided to lift the temporary measures restricting access to the "TikTok" platform on the territory of Albania, arguing that issues in the field of public and social security in the digital environment have already been addressed.
The decision signed on February 3 has tasked the National Cyber Security Authority to immediately discontinue the implementation of the technical measures previously imposed, which will enable full access to the platform.
The TikTok ban was imposed in March of last year after the tragic murder of 14-year-old Martin Cani near the "Fan Noli" school in the capital by his peer. At the time, Prime Minister Edi Rama considered social networks a source of violence and bullying, while a consultation process with parent communities in the country's schools was undertaken for the final decision.
"Social networks, and especially TikTok and Snapchat, daily absorb our children into their labyrinths from a young age," Rama said in a media appearance after the teenager's murder.
Meanwhile, the new decision enters into force after publication in the "Official Gazette" and restores the normality of TikTok use by citizens throughout the country.
