20 million USD for border inspection posts - EU integration challenges, Salla: Increasing food security

The government plans to make an investment of around $20 million for the construction of 7 Border Inspection Points, as well as for further strengthening the institutional capacities of the National Food Authority and ISUV, which have a key role in the European integration process and the control of imports and exports.
The Minister of Agriculture, Andis Salla, presented at the National Council for European Integration the priorities and commitments of the institution he leads in the field of food safety, veterinary medicine and plant health, within the framework of Albania's integration process into the European Union, where he emphasized that in addition to the dozens of by-laws approximating to the EU that will be adopted, the focus will also be on strengthening official risk-based controls for imported, exported and domestically produced products.
"Meeting the requirements in this chapter is not limited to the approximation of legislation, but requires the construction and effective functioning of a control system equivalent to that of the EU. The challenge is not only to adopt acts according to the EU, but to implement them in practice. We will continue practical support for operators and farmers, with the aim of strengthening trust and guaranteeing food safety for the consumer," said Salla.
Businesses, for their part, say they need to be prepared for this challenge, but an on-the-ground analysis of the real situation in the sector is also required.
The National Council for European Integration (KKIE), in cooperation with the European Movement in Albania (EMA), held an awareness-raising meeting on the topic: "Progress in addressing the recommendations of the European Commission Report 2025 regarding the field of food security and the challenges in fulfilling commitments within the framework of the negotiation process in Group Chapter 5 "Resources, Agriculture, Cohesion"/Chapter 12".
