Is compulsory military service "awakened"? - Albania has no plans to bring it back. Serbia and Croatia, the only ones to start recruitment

At a time when threats in the world are increasing, many countries are increasing investments in the field of defense. The Western Balkans also aims to awaken this industry, with some of the countries reinstating compulsory military service.
In 2024, Albania first declared its readiness to reactivate its military industry. Since then, some concrete steps have been taken with the creation of the state-owned company for the production and trade of weapons, ammunition, equipment and military technologies, KAYO, which will start production this year, while investments are being made in the revitalization of departments/factories, the improvement of critical infrastructure and the development of capacities. However, as for compulsory military service, since its abolition in 2010, the country has no plans to restore it.
The opposite is true in Serbia. Since its abolition in 2011, military service has been voluntary. The Serbian state is now expected to take a position on whether this service will be mandatory starting in December 2026 or March 2027, with registrations starting in September. Military service will last 75 days.
As of this year, Croatia has also made military service mandatory for its citizens. It was officially abolished in 2008. The service lasts two months, with a net monthly salary of 1,100 euros, while it is planned to train 800 to 4,000 soldiers each year in 3 barracks.
As for Kosovo, although in 2021 Prime Minister Albin Kurti raised the issue of its return, so far they have no concrete plan.
Montenegro, North Macedonia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, which abolished compulsory military service in 2006, have also not discussed the issue.
Austria, Cyprus, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Greece, Latvia, Lithuania, Sweden, Switzerland, Norway, Turkey, Ukraine and Russia have never abolished conscription. Norway even became the first European country to introduce compulsory military service for women.
