How much meat do Albanians consume? About 75 kg per year. Brazil, the United

Albanians consume around 179 million kilograms of meat, based on the latest data on foreign trade and domestic production, referred to INSTAT. If we translate this amount into per capita consumption, it turns out that an Albanian consumes an average of 75.7 kilograms of meat per year, or 6.3 kilograms per month, which translates to around 207 grams of meat per day.

Compared to previous years, per capita consumption has increased, despite the fact that domestic meat production has continued to decline. During 2024, livestock meat production was fixed at around 130.3 thousand tons, down from over 148 thousand tons in 2021. Meanwhile, market demand has been increasingly covered by imports.

According to official data, during 2024, about 48.6 million kilograms of meat and edible offal were imported, while exports remained at minimal levels, about 14.9 thousand kilograms in total. “Scan Intel” calculates meat consumption based on the amounts of imports and domestic production, deducting exports, which have an almost negligible impact.

But what weight does imported meat have in total consumption?

Calculations show that 27.2% of the meat consumed in Albania is imported, while 72.8% is covered by domestic production. In other words, out of the approximately 75.7 kilograms of meat that an average Albanian consumes per year, over 20.6 kilograms are imported meat.

But, where does the meat we consume come from?

Referring to foreign trade data for 2024, Albania imports the vast majority of its meat from 10 main partners, which cover over 80% of total imports. In first place is Brazil, with about 13 million kilograms of meat, followed by the United States, with 9.3 million kilograms, Greece with 9.1 million kilograms, and Italy with about 4.9 million kilograms.

Next on the list are Paraguay with 2.45 million kilograms, Poland with about 2 million kilograms, Germany with 1.68 million, France with 922 thousand kilograms, the Netherlands with 770 thousand kilograms and Kosovo with 643 thousand kilograms of meat. Imports from other countries, outside this group, amount to about 3.8 million kilograms.

In total, the probability that meat consumed in Albania has come from one of these top 10 countries is around 23%, while the chances that it originates from Brazil, the US or Greece are each over 5%.

An important factor influencing the high level of per capita meat consumption is also the significant increase in tourism. During 2024, Albania recorded a record number of foreign visitors, which has significantly increased the demand for food products, including meat and its by-products, especially in the service sector, bars and restaurants. This means that part of the recorded consumption is not directly attributable to the resident population, but to the consumption of tourists, somewhat distorting the per capita consumption indicator and exerting additional pressure on the domestic supply.
