Lasers and spy satellites in military space spending - Germany is considering

Germany is considering investments ranging from spy satellites and space planes to attack lasers as part of a 35 billion euro military space spending plan aimed at countering growing threats from Russia and China in orbit.

Germany will build an encrypted military constellation of more than 100 satellites, known as SATCOM Stage 4, over the next few years.

The network would mirror the model used by the US Space Development Agency, a Pentagon unit that places satellites in low Earth orbit for communications and missile tracking.

Rheinmetall is in talks with German satellite manufacturer OHB about a joint bid for an unnamed German military satellite project.

The potential deal comes as Europe's three leading space firms, Airbus, Thales and Leonardo, are looking to build a European satellite communications alternative to Elon Musk's Starlink.

Germany's investment in military space architecture reflected a much more contested space environment since Russia's full invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Berlin and its European allies, he said, needed to strengthen their deterrent posture by investing not only in secure communications but also in capabilities that could disrupt or disable hostile space systems.

Germany will channel funds into satellites, sensors and intelligence-gathering systems designed to intercept adversary spacecraft, including lasers and devices capable of targeting ground infrastructure.

The country would give priority to small and large domestic and European suppliers for the program.
