Fuel consumption hits record, beer "falls"/8-month period, more coffee and cigarettes were imported!
Fuel is among the excise goods with the highest quantity imported and consumed in the country, driven by tourism which is gradually expanding throughout the year, where there is no longer interest only in the coastline but also in exploring urban, historical and mountainous areas, leading to increased use of vehicles.
According to official data from the Ministry of Finance, approximately 489.8 thousand tons of fuel have been cleared and consumed by August 2025. Compared to January-August 2024, imports of this product have increased by 49 thousand tons.
This is a record level in years, also influenced by the drop in oil prices on the market. Currently, a liter of oil is sold for an average of 175 lek per liter, which has encouraged greater mobility of citizens for both short and long vacations.
On the other hand, oil, as one of the main products that affects the economic chain of goods and services, signals increased domestic demand and economic growth.
Meanwhile, another product that has seen growth is coffee.
In the first 8 months of the year, 6,175 tons of coffee were imported, an increase of 565 tons compared to the previous year.
Cigarette imports also took a turn in August, after having been in decline throughout the year. Thus, 2,257 tons were imported in 8 months, an increase of 222 tons compared to January-August 2024.
Meanwhile, beer imports have also undergone a turnaround, as they show a decrease compared to last year. By August, 41.2 thousand tons have been imported, or about 900 tons less. The decrease for this product refers mainly to the month of August.
Revenues from excise duties during the period January-August 2025 amounted to 462 million euros, an increase of 44 million euros.
