New Durrës-Pogradec train ready in 4 years? - Railway Corridor VIII, the government plans to complete the project worth over 400 million euros

The government aims to complete the VIII railway corridor, a line from Durrës to Pogradec, within 4 years. The ambition is expressed in the government program 2025 – 2029, which, among other things, states that regional connectivity will be guaranteed with the Durrës–Rrogozhinë and Rrogozhinë–Pogradec projects, the 2 segments of this corridor. Including the Vorë – Hani i Hotit railway, which will connect Albania with Montenegro, the investment package foreseen for cross-border projects amounts to over 800 million euros, of which over 400 million euros are requested specifically for the Durrës – Pogradec line.
Currently, it has advanced with the finding of financing of 120.5 million euros, for the Durrës - Rrogozhina segment. More specifically, for this lot, which has a length of 33.5 km, a few weeks ago the Council of Ministers ratified the 60.5 million euro grant agreement with the European Investment Bank. This grant is part of the financial support of the European Union, within the framework of the Western Balkans Investment Framework and is accompanied by a loan of 30 million euros from the EIB. For the implementation of the project, a loan of 30 million euros will also be granted by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, as an integral part of the 120.5 million euro financing package.
As for the other segment, from Rrogozhina to Pogradec, there is still no official information regarding financing. This will also be the most expensive segment of the VIII railway Corridor, as it has a length of 120.3 km. Earlier, the Western Balkans Investment Framework has listed the benefits that will come from the rehabilitation or construction of this line, starting from shortening distances, increasing travel safety and reducing air emissions from transport.
