BYD, the best-selling car in the EU - Surpasses Tesla for the second month in a row
Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD sold three times more new cars in the European Union in August 2025 than in August 2024, surpassing US competitor Tesla for the second consecutive month, data from the European automobile association ACEA showed.
Stellantis returned to sales growth in Europe for the first time in more than a year, while the overall market expanded with a surge in sales of plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEV) and battery electric vehicles (BEV).
Europe's battered auto industry faces challenges, including U.S. import tariffs, competition from China and difficulties in profitably meeting domestic regulations for the approval of electric vehicles.
Automakers have been ramping up sales of PHEVs to meet emissions standards with cars that are more affordable and profitable than pure electric vehicles. Chinese brands have also used the technology to minimize the impact of European Union tariffs on domestically produced electric vehicles and win over European drivers skeptical of China.
Sales in the European Union, Britain and the European Free Trade Association rose 4.7% to 0.8 million cars in August, ACEA data showed. Volkswagen and Renault registrations rose 4.8% and 7.8% respectively on a year-on-year basis.
Tesla's sales in the EU fell by 36.6%, reducing its market share to 1.2% from 2% a year earlier. BYD's sales rose by 201.3%, giving it 1.3% of the market.
Sales of SAIC Motor, the owner of MG, also from China, rose 59.4% in August, taking its year-to-date market share to 1.9% and making it the tenth best-selling carmaker on the block so far this year.
Total car sales in the EU rose by 5.3%. Registrations of battery electric cars, electric hybrids and plug-in hybrids increased by 30.2%, 54.5% and 14.1% respectively, together accounting for 62.2% of block registrations, up from 52.8% in August 2024.
