Waste separation starts at home and business - New rules/ Aim to increase recycling and reduce the amount that ends up in landfills

The Ministry of Environment has issued for public consultation a draft decision that aims to establish clearer rules for the differentiated collection of waste, with the aim of increasing recycling and reducing the amount of waste that ends up in landfills.
The document defines the criteria, procedures and deadlines that citizens, businesses and local self-government units must follow for separating waste into different streams, such as paper and cardboard, glass, metal, plastic or other recyclable materials.
According to the draft, waste separation must be done at the source, which in the case of families means separation by type at home, while collection will be carried out through special containers and equipment, identified with different colors for each type of waste.
The draft decision also provides for a reporting system for operators and municipalities. Operators that collect waste must report annually to municipalities on the quantity and type of waste collected, while local units must report to the National Environment Agency on data on collection, treatment and problems identified in the system.
The draft decision also sets deadlines for local self-government units to increase the differentiated collection of waste. According to the objectives set out in the draft, the level of preparation for reuse and recycling of municipal waste should reach at least 25% by 2030, 50% by 2033 and 55% by 2035. In the long term, this level is intended to increase to 60% by 2040 and 65% by 2045.
