Favorable energy price for water utilities - ERE approves tariffs to be applied

The Energy Regulatory Authority has approved the prices at which water utilities supplied by the Supplier of Last Resort will pay for electricity during 2026, maintaining last year's preferential tariffs.

According to the decision, companies that are connected to 35 kV voltage will be charged 9.33 lek/kWh, while for companies that are connected to 20, 10 and 6 kV voltage, the price will be 11.77 lek/kWh.

The application of preferential prices for water supply and sewage companies began in 2023, following a request made to the Albanian Electric Power Corporation, by the National Water Supply and Sewerage Agency and the Ministry of Infrastructure and Energy, on the need for the WSS companies to apply special tariffs. This is in order to guarantee the financial aspect of the WSS companies' activities, including debt recovery.

At that time, it was requested that the reduction of electricity tariffs be followed by the recovery of the debt that these companies have towards the Electricity Distribution Operator. According to the latest available data, by August 2025, arrears reached 20.42 billion lek, up from 19.54 billion lek at the end of 2024. Electricity costs account for about 23% of the operation and maintenance costs in the water supply and sewage sector, while 12 out of 17 companies fail to cover these costs. This causes companies to rely on government subsidies or delay payments towards the Electricity Distribution Operator, accumulating numerous debts.
