15 million euro agreement, free internet in 73 public spaces in 61

Public spaces in 61 municipalities across the country will have free internet for citizens. Within the framework of the European Union's Growth Agenda for Albania, the contract for the implementation of the WiFi4WB initiative was signed, following a preliminary process where municipalities across the country were invited to apply. In total, there will be 73 points where this service will be offered, as there will be 2 selected spaces in 12 of the cities.

"The Growth Plan is delivering results. This project is not just about technology and access. It is about empowering communities, increasing opportunities and integrating the region into the EU's Digital Single Market," said Silvio Gonzato, EU Ambassador to Albania.

The agreement was also welcomed by representatives of the Albanian government, which described this service as extremely important for citizens. “This gives our municipalities and communities the opportunity to offer free and high-quality access to the internet in public spaces: squares, parks, libraries, schools. It is not only an investment in the modernization of public services, but also in digital equality, creating better conditions for young people, small businesses and citizens who want to be active participants in the digital economy,” said Ervin Demo, State Minister for Local Government.

"Digital connectivity and free Wi-Fi will empower users to benefit more from the digital transformation, to have access to and freely use network services," said Enkelejda Muçaj, Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Energy.

The WiFi4WB initiative in Albania is funded by the European Union with 15 million euros and co-founded by the German government with 1.5 million euros, within the framework of the EU4Digital project implemented by GIZ.
