Controls for imported organic products are increased - Decisions/ How will shipments be verified at border crossing points?
The government has strengthened customs controls regarding shipments of organic products imported from abroad.
The decision published in the Official Gazette sets out new rules for the notification and control of shipments of organic products entering or leaving the country.
Referring to the decision, importers and exporters must notify the relevant institutions in advance at least 24 hours before the arrival of the shipment, submitting commercial documentation and organic certificates.
High-risk shipments will be subject to physical checks and sampling. After the checks, inspectors at the crossing points decide whether the products are allowed to enter as organic, non-organic, or banned altogether.
On the other hand, importers of organic products will have the obligation to maintain and manage the documentation accompanying each shipment and ensure verification by the relevant authorities. Records of documentation will be kept by importers, organic operators and control bodies, including all certifications and verifications carried out for product shipments.
In the case of entry into Albania, importers must declare their activities, the storage and trading facilities for organic products, as well as the use of any storage facilities or facilities.
Meanwhile, according to Article 10, if during the control at the crossing point inspectors suspect non-compliance in quality or origin, they immediately notify the importer and temporarily prohibit the import or trade of the goods until the investigation is completed. Depending on the results of the analysis, the products may be allowed to circulate as organic or non-organic, or be banned completely.
The purpose of these measures is to guarantee the quality and safety of organic products circulating on the Albanian market.
