Nobel Prize in Chemistry Winners - Three Scientists Recognized for Development

Scientists Susumu Kitagawa, Richard Robson and Omar Yaghi have been awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry "for the development of metal-organic frameworks," the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced.

This prestigious award, which has more than a century of history and is considered one of the highest accolades in the world of science, is given to the winners, who share about 1.2 million dollars between them.

"Through the development of metal-organic frameworks, the laureates have given chemists new opportunities to address some of the challenges we face today," the committee's official statement said.

The Nobel Prize in Chemistry was the third to be announced this year, according to tradition, following those in medicine and physics earlier in the week.

These awards were established by the will of Swedish inventor and industrialist Alfred Nobel and have been awarded since 1901, with some interruptions mainly due to the world wars. Nobel himself was a chemist and his wealth grew thanks to inventions in the field, including dynamite.

Although they sometimes remain in the shadows compared to laureates in physics, literature or peace, the Nobel Prizes in Chemistry have recognized very important discoveries, such as nuclear fission or techniques for DNA sequencing.

Last year, the prize was awarded to American scientists David Baker and John Jumper, as well as Briton Demis Hassabis, for their work in deciphering the structure of proteins and creating new proteins, with great impact on drug development and other medical fields.
