Freeing up public spaces in Tirana/ Balla: We listen to citizens from corner to
In Tirana, the campaign to vacate public spaces occupied without permission by businesses that have placed tables, chairs, tents or other elements that impede pedestrian movement on the sidewalks continues.

Following Prime Minister Edi Rama's order to vacate public spaces throughout the country, tables, chairs, and tents are being removed from sidewalks in Tirana, which were compromising the safety and walking of citizens and pedestrians.

The elected SP MP in Tirana, Taulant Balla, who is also the Minister of State for Relations with Parliament, accompanied by the elected Socialist Party MP in Tirana, Olta Xhaçka, were closely acquainted with the issues related to common spaces and public services in unit no. 2.

Balla stated that "we will listen to citizens from corner to corner, in full respect of the 19 historic mandates in Tirana, which we must consider an extraordinary debt to be repaid, first and foremost by not severing ties with communities, but by listening and working more with ordinary people and for ordinary people."

Balla said that notifications should be made so that citizens can take measures to remove objects they have placed in public spaces. The Minister emphasized that the process of vacating public spaces will continue without interruption, to guarantee access for all citizens.

He said that “public spaces between buildings are the common property of residents and cannot be privatized by anyone, regardless of who the former owner of the land was.” During the inspection, Balla denounced the installation of fences, glass partitions, or unauthorized structures that restrict the free movement of citizens, warning of their demolition.

He also focused on the cleaning and maintenance of these spaces, demanding increased care from the responsible institutions. "Common spaces must be clean and safe for everyone: for mothers with children, for children and for the elderly. They cannot be turned into garbage collection areas or obstructed by illegal parking," he emphasized.

At the conclusion of the inspection, Balla stated that this is just the beginning of a long process aimed at returning public spaces to the service of the community.

He appealed to citizens to keep their living spaces clean, and spoke in favor of fining those who do not comply with the law.

While Xhaçka said that "throughout the unit, we will enter the neighborhoods to see the problems that citizens have in relation to the most priority spaces and investments in the environments where they live."

A broad campaign is underway in several cities across the country to vacate illegally occupied public spaces.
