OpenAI "challenges" Google Chrome - The new web browser will be driven

OpenAI is set to launch an artificial intelligence-powered web browser soon. The startup aims to challenge Google's dominance in the sector by changing the way consumers interact with the web.

OpenAI is close to launching an artificial intelligence-powered web browser that aims to challenge Google Chrome. The browser is expected to launch in the coming weeks and is set to fundamentally change the way consumers use the internet, according to people familiar with the matter.

The development will give OpenAI more direct access to a key source of Google’s success: user data. If the browser is used by ChatGPT’s 500 million weekly active users, it could put pressure on some of the revenue Google earns from advertising. Chrome is a key pillar of Alphabet’s advertising business, accounting for nearly three-quarters of the company’s revenue, as it provides user data that helps Alphabet target ads accurately and profitably.

OpenAI’s browser is designed so that some user interactions happen within a chat interface similar to ChatGPT, rather than having users click through to web pages, two of the sources said. This is part of OpenAI’s broader strategy to weave the services into consumers’ personal and professional lives, they said.

Led by entrepreneur Sam Altman, OpenAI shook up the tech industry with its chatbot, ChatGPT, in late 2022. After initial success, the startup has faced stiff competition from rivals like Google and Anthropic, and is looking for new areas to continue growing.

A web browser would allow OpenAI to directly integrate its products with artificial intelligence agents, such as Operator, within the browsing experience. This would allow the browser to perform tasks on the user's behalf, the sources said.
