Customs-AKU cooperation strengthened to guarantee food safety

The Director General of Customs, Besmir Beja, held a meeting today with the Director General of the National Food Authority, Blerina Gjylameti, in the context of strengthening inter-institutional cooperation and increasing the efficiency of controls at border crossing points.
The focus of the discussions was on deepening operational coordination between Customs structures and NFA inspectors, with the aim of consolidating joint controls and increasing preventive capacities against any risk that threatens food safety and public health.
The Director General of Customs stressed the necessity of harmonizing risk indicators and integrating risk analysis into control selection processes, so that interventions are targeted, proportionate and based on operational intelligence. He also underlined the importance of systematically exchanging real-time information on cargoes presenting alerts or risk profiles, thus increasing the level of monitoring and traceability.
For her part, the Director General of the AKU assessed the key role of the presence of inspectors in customs branches, as an essential link in guaranteeing the safety chain and traceability of food products. She announced that investments will continue to improve the supporting infrastructure at customs points, including warehouses and refrigerated facilities, in order to meet the required legal and technical standards.
Both leaders assessed food safety as a strategic priority, emphasizing that consumer protection and ensuring import safety standards remain primary objectives of inter-institutional cooperation. In this context, it was agreed to intensify coordination mechanisms and establish joint control practices, especially at border customs branches.
The General Directorate of Customs remains committed to strengthening cooperation with all law enforcement institutions and responsible agencies, in order to guarantee security, legality and the protection of the public interest.
