Durrës expands sewerage - Karakaçi: 85 million euros European grant

Work has begun in Durrës on one of the most important projects in the wastewater treatment system. The investment aims to modernize and expand the treatment plant, as well as rehabilitate the city's sewage network.

The project is supported by a grant of around 85 million euros from the European Union, while the funding is supplemented by the French Development Agency. According to the Minister of Infrastructure, Enea Karakaçi, this is the largest grant given by the European Union for a project in Albania.

In total, the project envisages the construction of around 113 kilometers of new sewerage networks, 4 pumping stations and around 13 thousand new connections. The first phase includes the plant and main networks, while the second phase will extend to Shkozet, Porto Romano and Spitalë.

For the second phase, the European Union will cover about two-thirds of the investment value through a grant. The aim is to expand access to the sewage system and improve wastewater treatment in rapidly developing areas.

Minister Karakaçi described the project as concrete evidence of the benefits of the European integration process, emphasizing that European funding is expected to increase as Albania approaches the EU.

According to him, for the next three years, from 2027 to 2030, funding has been secured for wastewater treatment projects with a total value of around 330 million euros.

The investments aim to improve water supply and sewage infrastructure, reduce pollution and increase wastewater treatment standards, especially in urban and tourist areas.
