Russian tourists "abandon" Montenegro - Three times less than in 2019.

In September, Montenegro hosted 189,447 tourists, who stayed a total of 687,000 nights. Compared to September 2019, their number increased by 24,200, while the number of nights spent increased by only 7,000.

This change is related, among other things, to the composition of visitors. After Serbian tourists, for years the country was dominated by citizens from Russia. However, due to political decisions, especially sanctions against the Russian Federation, the situation has changed. The sanctions led to the cancellation of flights to Moscow, which led to a drastic decrease in Russian visitors.

Even in 2019, their number fell significantly compared to previous periods, but it is considered a record year before the pandemic and is always used for comparison. This September, 5,946 tourists from Russia visited the country, while in the same month of 2019 their number was 17,483, almost three times more. The number of nights spent by Russian tourists this September was 25,078, while six years ago it was 125,395, five times more.

Unlike Russians, more Turkish citizens have been visiting Montenegro in recent years. A large part of them do not go as tourists, but to live in the country. According to Monstat data for September, 6,682 tourists from Turkey visited Montenegro, twice as many as in 2019, when the number was 3,316. The number of nights spent by Turks this September was 16,132, while in 2019 it was 5,896, almost three times more.

Last week, the government lifted the visa-free regime for Turkish citizens. The decision aims to regulate the flow of visitors and improve control over the stay of foreign nationals in the country.
