Vertical Gas Corridor - Expansion connects the Balkans to European resources and markets

North Macedonia has signed the declaration to join the Vertical Gas Corridor, a regional initiative aimed at diversifying gas supplies and strengthening energy security in Southeastern and Central Europe.
Skopje's membership further connects the Balkan energy network with the European infrastructure, creating opportunities for gas transportation in several directions, from the south to the markets of Central and Northern Europe.
One of the key projects for North Macedonia is the gas interconnector with Greece, currently under construction and expected to be operational in 2027.
Through this connection, the country will have access to the Southern Gas Corridor and to Greek liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminals, including the Revithoussa and Alexandroupolis terminals.
Skopje also plans to build a gas interconnector with Serbia. The project will create a new connection to the north and bring North Macedonia closer to the markets of Central and Eastern Europe.
The Vertical Corridor currently includes Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Moldova, Ukraine, Slovakia and Hungary, while Serbia is also in the process of joining the initiative.
For the region, the expansion of the corridor aims to create a more integrated energy network, enabling gas to move in several directions and reducing dependence on a limited number of routes and supply sources.
With the entry of North Macedonia and the approach of Serbia to this initiative, the Balkans is strengthening its connection to the European gas network, turning energy infrastructure into an increasingly important element of regional security and cooperation.
