Transport, the challenge of transition - New plan for decarbonization: Electrification, public transport and rail

Transport is one of the key sectors where our country must intervene to meet its energy and climate objectives by the end of the decade. The revised National Energy and Climate Plan identifies transport as the sector with the largest share in the country's final energy consumption, while its dependence on oil products makes the transition particularly challenging.
To change this structure, the newly approved document envisages a combination of measures that include the electrification of road transport, the expansion of charging infrastructure for electric vehicles, the increase in the use of public transport, and the shift towards modes of transport with lower energy consumption.
According to the projections of the scenario with additional measures included in the plan, the share of renewable sources in energy consumption in transport is expected to reach around 34.8% in 2030, from only 0.5% currently. This result is related to electrification, but also to the use of alternative fuels and other renewable sources in the sector.
Measures also include improving the efficiency of the vehicle fleet and creating conditions for the wider use of electric vehicles. The development of a network of charging points is considered a necessary part of this process, while transport policies also aim to promote alternatives to individual vehicle use.
In parallel, PKEK links the decarbonization of transport with the development of public and rail transport. Shifting part of the movement of passengers and goods towards more efficient modes of transport aims to reduce fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.
