Home keeps women away from work/ Unpaid work, 28% compared to only 1.5% of men
Even after a decade, household chores continue to be one of the main reasons that keep Albanian women out of the labor market. INSTAT data on the economically inactive population aged 15-64 show that in 2025, 28.1% of inactive women declare themselves engaged in household chores, while among men this percentage is only 1.5%.
Compared to 2024, the share of women outside the labor market due to domestic duties has increased significantly. A year ago, the indicator was 24.9%, which means an increase of 3.2 percentage points in one year.
At the same time, for men the change remains minimal. From 0.9% in 2024 to 1.5% in 2025. This means that in the last year, the percentage of women inactive due to household duties was almost 19 times higher than that of men.
But the gap is not a new development. In 2015, 27.1% of economically inactive women were out of the labor market due to domestic duties, compared to just 0.9% of men. Five years later, in 2020, the percentage for women had risen to 28%, while that for men was just 1%.
So, after a temporary decrease in 2024, when the indicator for women dropped to 24.9%, 2025 restores the weight of household duties to the highest level of the four years compared.
Even in the total economically inactive population, the share of people who stay out of the labor market due to household duties has increased. It was 17.4% in 2015, 18.2% in 2020, fell to 14.6% in 2024, and in 2025 rose to 18.5%, the highest level in four years.
The data show that, despite changes in the labor market over the past decade, the gender division of the burden of household chores remains largely unchanged. For women, it continues to be a significant factor in staying out of the labor force, while for men it remains an almost marginal reason.
