One in five residents under 18 years old/ How does Albania rank compared to the

The percentage of the population under 18 is one of the indicators that helps to understand the demographic structure of a country. It shows how young the society is and is directly related to the needs for education, health services, employment and social policies in the future. But how does Albania present itself in this regard and how large is the weight of children in its population?

According to data published by Visual Capitalist, based on United Nations statistics, 20.1% of Albania's population is under 18. This means that about one in five residents of the country belongs to this age group.

Compared to the countries in the region, Albania is in a relatively favorable position. Montenegro leads with 21.8% of the population under 18, while North Macedonia has the same percentage as Albania, 20.1%.

On the other hand, the share of the young population is lower in Serbia, where children under 18 make up 17.2% of the population, and in Bosnia and Herzegovina, with 15.9%. These figures show that countries in the region are not coping with demographic changes in the same way, while declining birth rates and population aging remain significant challenges for many societies.

When the comparison is expanded to a global level, the differences become even more apparent. According to the publication, 28 of the 30 countries with the highest percentage of the population under 18 are African. The exceptions are Afghanistan and Yemen.

This new demographic structure is largely linked to higher fertility rates in these countries. However, even within Africa there are important variations, as the pace of fertility decline and family size are not the same in all countries.

At the other end of the scale are some of the world's oldest societies. South Korea, Japan, Taiwan and Singapore all have less than 15% of their population under 18.

Low percentages of the population under 18 are also recorded in several European countries. Greece, Monaco and Italy all have less than 20% of the population in this age group.

Compared to these countries, Albania has a somewhat higher share of young people. However, this does not mean that the country is beyond demographic challenges. On the contrary, changes in fertility, emigration and population aging remain factors that may affect its structure in the coming years.
