Electric cars are becoming increasingly popular among German buyers. Almost one in three new vehicles registered in August was a fully electric car. One reason for this trend could be the federal government's subsidies for electric car purchases.

Sales of electric cars rose sharply in August. Last month, almost 69,000 fully electric vehicles were registered for the first time in Germany, according to the Federal Motor Transport Authority. This represented an increase of 75.1% compared to the same month last year. As a result, fully electric passenger vehicles achieved a market share of 32.4%.

Rising fuel prices and the availability of increasingly affordable models have encouraged customers to choose electric vehicles. However, federal subsidies for electric vehicles may also be a key factor behind this trend.

German consumers have been able to apply for it since mid-May, with retroactive effect for vehicles registered from January 1 onwards. The scheme subsidises the purchase or lease of new electric or hybrid vehicles, however the amount of the subsidy depends on the car model, family size and income.

In the first half of the year, almost 50 percent more fully electric vehicles were registered than in the same period in 2025. However, sales of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) fell sharply in 2025, meaning growth rates are based on a particularly low base. For this reason too, experts believe this boom has come at a high cost to the taxpayer.

The main beneficiaries of this boom have been foreign manufacturers, with Chinese groups significantly increasing their market share in August, rising from 4.4% to 10%.

While demand for electric cars remains strong, demand for petrol vehicles fell by almost 38% and diesel cars recorded a decline of just over 17%. In total, around 212,500 new vehicles were registered on German roads in August, representing an increase of 2.6% compared to the same month last year. Of these, 40.5% were new registrations by private individuals, while 59.4% were by business owners.
