80% of imported vehicles are used! - In North Macedonia, the average age of cars is 19.4 years

Customs Directorate data show that over 80% of vehicles imported into North Macedonia in the last ten years are used. At the same time, the number of registered vehicles has doubled, from 350,000 in 2012 to almost 700,000 in 2024. Meanwhile, the average age of vehicles has increased to 19.4 years, meaning that more and more old vehicles are on the road.
Diesel vehicles dominate with 63%, gasoline has dropped to 26%, while electric and hybrid vehicles are recording rapid growth, with +169% for electric vehicles and +295% for hybrid vehicles last year alone.
For every new vehicle imported, an average of 3.5 used vehicles were imported. In the first 11 months of last year, a total of 12,025 new vehicles and 41,842 used vehicles were imported.
Imports of new vehicles last year alone for the first time exceeded the number of new vehicle imports in 2009, when 10,574 new vehicles were imported compared to 2,944 used ones.
Diesel dominates passenger vehicles with annual growth of over 12% over the last ten years, gasoline has fallen on average by −2.32% per year, while electric and hybrid vehicles show high relative growth. Electric vehicles grew by 169%, while hybrids grew by 295%.
