British government promises 400,000 new jobs - Aims to expand clean energy sector by 2030
The UK has announced plans to train and employ more workers in the clean energy sector. The government has promised to create 400,000 jobs by 2030.
Plumbers, electricians and welders are among 31 priority occupations that are "particularly in demand", with employment in the wind, solar and nuclear energy sectors expected to double to 860,000 jobs within five years, ministers have said.
The government has announced that thousands of jobs are needed to develop Britain’s clean energy sector and “ultimately reduce bills.” As part of the strategy, five colleges will be set up to train workers, with £2.5m of funding going to pilot schemes in Cheshire, Lincolnshire and Pembrokeshire, according to the Department for Energy Security.
Meanwhile, oil and gas workers could benefit from up to £20m from the UK and Scottish governments for tailored training in clean energy positions. The department added that 10,000 extra jobs will be needed to support the construction of the Sizewell C nuclear power station in Suffolk.
The British government is seeking to keep its promise to cut energy bills by £300 by 2030, after they were raised by 2% for millions of UK citizens under a new price cap set by regulator Ofgem.
The increase for the October-December period means that a household consuming an average amount of energy will pay £1,755 per year, or £35 more than before.
According to the Department for Energy Security, positions in the clean energy sector will have average salaries of over £50,000, compared to the national average of £37,000 in the UK.
