Greece's share of the global tourism market is estimated at 2.5%, according to a study by the National Bank of Greece (NBG). Greece ranks among the top five countries with the highest market share growth in the last decade (2% in 2016). In absolute terms, international arrivals increased by approximately 13 million travelers in the last decade.

The study shows that this development is the result of three main factors: 40% of the growth share is explained by the growth of tourism worldwide, 20% comes from the increase in demand in the Mediterranean region as a tourist destination, while the remaining 40% of the growth is due to the improvement of the domestic tourism product. Greece's excellent performance was based mainly on the improvement of the quality of hotels and the strengthening of air connections. However, maintaining this momentum is not guaranteed, in an era of stronger competition from countries in the region (Turkey, Albania, Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia).

Greece's advantages in this environment include connectivity to developed markets (e.g. the US) and distant emerging markets (e.g. China, India), as well as the reduction in seasonality of Greek tourism, with summer representing 50% of arrivals compared to 53% five years ago.

To further strengthen the tourism product, NBG proposes to promote two directions: highlighting the country's "hidden treasures" by promoting alternative destinations, but also by returning investments in basic infrastructure to pre-crisis levels (reduced by 8%) so that they keep pace with investments in the tourism product (increased by 14%).

Total tourism receipts for the ten months reached 22.4 billion euros from 35.3 million travelers, according to data from the Bank of Greece. The majority of tourists came from Germany, with arrivals reaching 5.7 million, while German spending in Greece exceeded 3.6 billion euros (630 euros per trip). The British came in second place, with almost 4.7 million tourists and spending exceeding 3.5 billion euros (755 euros per trip). Tourists from the United States continued to grow (+2%) and reached 1.4 million, spending a total of more than 1.5 billion euros (1,104 euros per trip). On the other hand, tourist arrivals from France fell slightly (-2%), reaching 1.9 million and spending 1.3 billion euros (686 euros per trip).
