Britain, bill discounts to "silence" critics - Families living near energy infrastructure, up to 2,500 pounds discount
Under a new British government plan, households living near new electricity transmission pylons will receive a £125 discount on their energy bills every six months for a period of 10 years. The figure could total up to £2,500.
New transmission pylons and cables are needed across Britain to modernise the existing grid, connect new wind and solar farms, nuclear power stations and large energy storage facilities, and cope with the expected growth in heat pumps and home electric car chargers.
The government says that by 2030, twice as much new transmission infrastructure will be needed as has been built in the past decade. However, the construction of new pylons has faced opposition from residents and environmentalists, concerned about the visual impact and encroachment on natural areas.
Britain has pledged to provide clean energy by 2030 as part of efforts to boost the economy, cut carbon emissions and reduce dependence on volatile fossil fuel prices.
The government cabinet hopes that financial benefits for local residents will reduce dissatisfaction and delays in planning the infrastructure needed for the transition to clean energy.
Under the plan, households living within 500 metres of new or improved transmission infrastructure could receive annual discounts of up to £250 over a 10-year period on their energy bills.
Meanwhile, reforms have been introduced to improve the operation of smart meters, including requiring that devices that do not work properly be repaired within 90 days or automatically compensating the customer. These measures, according to officials, will allow households to save money by better managing their energy consumption and benefiting from flexible tariffs, such as lower prices during off-peak hours or free energy when there is a surplus on the grid.
