EU, illegal entries decrease by 20% - Around 76,000 migrants crossed borders illegally in 2025
Illegal entries into the European Union fell to 75,900 in the first half of 2025, according to the EU border agency. Frontex said the 20 percent drop compared to the same period in 2024 was largely due to stronger preventive efforts by countries of origin. The agency has recently started operating at borders between countries outside the EU, having previously been limited to those between the bloc and non-member countries.
Frontex reported a "significant drop" in entries through the Western Balkans, those over the EU's eastern border with Belarus and from West Africa. However, attempts to cross illegally into the UK from the European Union rose by 23 percent, to 33,200.
The Central Mediterranean route remains the busiest migrant route into the EU, accounting for 39 percent of all irregular arrivals. Countries of departure include mainly Libya, Tunisia, Algeria and Egypt, with migrants typically landing in Malta and Italy.
It is also a deadly route. Some 760 people lost their lives in the Mediterranean in the first six months of this year, according to estimates from the International Organization for Migration. In 2024, 2,300 people lost their lives in the same area.
Frontex currently has around 3,000 agents and plans to gradually expand to 10,000, but a recent European Commission proposal would increase their ranks to 30,000.
Meanwhile, immigration remains at the top of the European agenda, as Denmark's government has pledged to impose stricter rules during the country's presidency of the Council of the EU.
