The year 2025, among the hottest in history - Temperatures and greenhouse gas

According to the World Meteorological Organization, 2025 is expected to be the second or third warmest year on record, amid worsening global warming.

The "State of the Climate Update for COP30" report states that the average global surface temperature was about 1.42 degrees Celsius higher than the pre-industrial average, while atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases and ocean heat reached record levels in 2024 and continue to increase in 2025.

According to the report, the extent of ice in the Arctic Ocean in March 2025 was the smallest ever recorded since satellite measurements began, while ice in Antarctica has remained well below average throughout the year.

The combined effects of high temperatures and extreme weather events have damaged agricultural lands, worsened livelihoods and deepened poverty, causing displacement in several regions of the world, the report said.

The Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organization, Celeste Saulo, stressed that it is almost impossible to achieve the target of limiting global temperature increase to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels in the coming years. However, she added that there is no room for pessimism, as the trend could still change.

A previous report by the Organization estimated that global temperatures will remain at or near record levels, increasing climate risks and the impact on society, the economy and sustainable development.
