Balluku in Athens: Albania aims to become a net energy exporter by 2030

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Infrastructure and Energy, Belinda Balluku, participated in the 6th meeting of the Partnership for Transatlantic Energy Cooperation (P-TEC), held in Athens, where key issues of energy security and cooperation between the United States of America, the European Union and the countries of Central and Southern Europe were discussed.

At this forum, US Secretary of Energy, Chris Wright, unveiled a vision that emphasized coordination among allied countries to minimize European dependence on Russian gas, as well as the role that advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence, are expected to play in transforming the continent's energy system.

During P-TEC 6, Greece signed a landmark agreement that will allow increased access to American liquefied natural gas (LNG) in the European market, turning the region into a geopolitically strategic hub. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced that in 2024 Greece will become a net energy exporter for the first time.

In her speech, Balluku informed the partners that Albania has a clear objective to move from an energy importing country to a net energy exporting country by 2030. She emphasized that this vision is supported by strategic energy interconnection projects, which include:

-Energy Corridor VIII, which lies on a regional axis of importance for energy exchanges;

-The East-West Corridor, connecting Romania, Bulgaria, North Macedonia, Albania and Italy;

-The new undersea interconnection line between Albania and Italy, which was considered by participants as a necessary investment for the energy security of Southeast Europe.

"The European energy sector is entering a new phase of transformation, where coordination and strategic partnership are key to guaranteeing sustainability and energy independence," said Balluku.

Also present in Athens was US Secretary of State Doug Burgum, with whom Balluku held an introductory meeting. His presence, according to her, underscores the central role that energy has in the global security architecture.

Balluku praised the direct engagement of the US Department of Energy in Europe as a guarantee for strengthening the transatlantic partnership and increasing the energy sustainability of the region.
