Another blow to global trade - Houthis seize strategic Red Sea point

The Houthi movement in Yemen has raised new concerns about the security of one of the world's most important sea lanes. The Iran-backed group has taken control of the island of Mayyun, also known as Perim, in the center of the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.

According to local officials and witnesses, Houthi fighters arrived on the island after government forces withdrew. With the move, the group has expanded its presence along the strait, which connects the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden and constitutes a vital corridor for international shipping.

The Houthi offensive has also expanded to other areas of the Red Sea coast. The group has captured the port city of Mokha, the island of Zuqar, as well as several coastal areas, significantly increasing its control over this part of Yemen.

The Bab el-Mandeb is a strategic point for world trade, as the sea route through the Red Sea and the Suez Canal connects Asian markets with Europe. According to data cited in the report, nearly a third of the world's container traffic passes through the Red Sea.

The developments are particularly worrying for energy markets, as the Bab el-Mandeb and Hormuz straits together account for more than a quarter of the world's maritime trade in crude oil and petroleum products.

The escalation of the situation comes at a time when the price of oil has exceeded $100 per barrel, while attacks and tensions in the region have added uncertainty to global supplies.

The conflict in Yemen has escalated in recent weeks, with fighting between the Houthis and Saudi-backed government forces. More than 500 people have been killed since the start of the latest clashes, most of them fighters, according to a tally compiled by AFP.

If the Houthis were to actually disrupt maritime traffic in Bab el-Mandeb, the consequences could extend beyond the region, increasing transportation costs and putting pressure on energy and commodity prices in international markets.
