Israel attacks Lebanon, widening conflict/ Strikes capital Beirut after Hezbollah rocket attack

Israel launched new airstrikes on Iran-backed Hezbollah militants in Lebanon, as US President Donald Trump signaled that the US-Israeli military assault on Iranian targets could continue for weeks.
Israel said it was attacking sites linked to the Shiite Muslim militant group Hezbollah in Lebanon, one of Tehran's key allies in the Middle East, after Hezbollah admitted to launching missiles and drones toward Israel in retaliation for the assassination of Iran's supreme leader, Ali Khamenei.
Israel carried out airstrikes on the southern suburbs of Beirut controlled by Hezbollah, with more than a dozen explosions rocking the Lebanese capital. Israel said it also hit senior Hezbollah militants near Beirut.
The attacks between Hezbollah and Israel, which come after a US-brokered ceasefire in 2024, widen the conflict that has spread across the Middle East since the United States and Israel attacked Iran on Saturday, driving up oil prices and disrupting air travel.
The Israeli military said Hezbollah was "fully responsible for any escalation" and warned residents of dozens of villages in southern and eastern Lebanon to evacuate.
Following Khamenei's death, Iran faces a power vacuum that could leave it in chaos, but the Trump administration has not set long-term goals for the country.
Iran's Revolutionary Guard said on Sunday it had hit three US and British tankers in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz, and attacked military bases in Kuwait and Bahrain with drones and missiles. Shipping data showed hundreds of ships, including oil and gas tankers, had dropped anchor, as traders expect a sharp rise in crude prices.
